Registering for the Swedish citizenship test: the letter, the fee and the dates

You cannot simply book the Swedish citizenship test. Migrationsverket decides who is offered it and sends a letter; with the letter you register on UHR's site, and for the first sitting that meant logging in with BankID, Freja eID or a personal number and a code from the letter, as reported. The first sitting, on the morning of 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö, was free and filled up. From tests held in 2027 the fee is 2,000 kronor per sitting, with stateless people who have refugee status or a Swedish travel document exempt. The next dates and places are due in autumn 2026.
Step one is Migrationsverket, not UHR
The test exists to satisfy one requirement in a citizenship application, so the application comes first. Migrationsverket assesses it; if you are aged 16 to 66 and your documents do not show knowledge of Swedish society, it offers you the test and sends a letter. UHR states that only people who have received that letter can register, and that questions about your citizenship case go to Migrationsverket while questions about the test go to UHR. Applying, then, is how you get into the queue for a sitting.
Registering with UHR
Registration for the August sitting opened in early June and ran on UHR's site through an account you log in to with an e-ID or the details in the letter. It closed when the sitting was full, and UHR's page said plainly that no late registration was possible. Candidates who needed adaptations, such as extra time or an adjusted test room, applied for them with the registration and could add documents until 2 July. Expect the same shape for the next sitting: a window that opens when the dates are announced, and a hall that fills.
The fee
The August 2026 sitting was free, because it was a trial. The government's regulation on the citizenship test (förordning 2026:451) sets the fee at 2,000 kronor per sitting, payable to UHR and applying for the first time to tests held in 2027, and exempts stateless people who have been granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority. The fee is for the test; the citizenship application carries its own charge of 2,900 kronor, which Migrationsverket also waives for stateless refugees.
Dates and places
One sitting has been held: Saturday 15 August 2026, in the morning, at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö, with the hall opening at 8:15 and about 1,000 candidates. UHR has said that the next dates and places will be announced during autumn 2026, and that information about when registration reopens will follow. Stockholm was the only venue for the trial; whether later sittings are held elsewhere in the country is one of the things the autumn announcement should settle.
Results, and what happens next
Results from the August sitting were due during the autumn, once UHR had analysed the pilot and settled the pass level. A pass is reported for your citizenship case; a fail means a new attempt at a later sitting, with the fee from 2027. Reports after the test said that a pass in the trial counts as a valid result even though the sitting was a pilot. If you are waiting for a result, the useful work is to keep the material fresh, because a second sitting would be soon after the first announcement.
