German citizenship test practice: all 460 official questions

Einbürgerungstest bestehen is a study app for Germany's naturalisation test: 33 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, 17 correct to pass, drawn from BAMF's catalogue of 300 general questions and 10 for your Bundesland. The app carries all 460 official questions with an explanation for each, in German and nine other languages, 32 lessons on the three topic areas and every Land, and a timed mock in the real format.

  • All 460 official questions, all 16 Länder
  • German and nine languages, one tap apart
  • Free: the first 50 questions and a mock a day

Einbürgerungstest bestehen is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) or any other German authority. The test questions are BAMF's published Gesamtfragenkatalog, which anyone may practise free at BAMF's Online-Testcenter; the app's lessons, explanations and translations are its own.

Mock exams

33 questions, 60 minutes, 17 to pass, like the real Testheft

The mock uses BAMF's format exactly: 30 general questions and 3 from the Bundesland you set, four options each, a 60-minute clock and a pass at 17 correct. The pass line is the official one from the Einbürgerungstestverordnung, not a guess. Every wrong answer goes on a review list, and every question carries an explanation.

Practice by topic

Three topic areas, 16 Länder, one official catalogue

Politik in der Demokratie, Geschichte und Verantwortung and Mensch und Gesellschaft hold 100 questions each, the same 300 BAMF publishes. Mein Bundesland holds the 10 questions for each of the 16 Länder, and the mock asks the 10 for the Land you set. Practise a chapter, your weak topics or your mistakes, or build a custom test.

Ten languages

Read the question in your language, answer it in German

The test is in German only. The app shows every question and explanation in German and, a tap away, in English, Turkish, Arabic, Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Italian, Russian or Persian, with read-aloud, so the German wording becomes familiar while the meaning is clear. Thirty-two lessons cover the three topic areas and each Land.

How it works

Install to test day.

  1. 01

Set your Bundesland and your test date

Download Einbürgerungstest bestehen on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 15.1 or later, pick the Land where you are registered, choose your language, and enter the test date your Prüfstelle gives you. The home screen counts down.

  2. 02

Learn a chapter, then test it

Read a chapter's lessons, drill its questions, then run a 33-question mock. The first 50 general questions and one mock a day are free; Premium unlocks all 460 questions, every Land, unlimited mocks and the custom test builder.

  3. 03

Switch to German before the test

Once the meaning is clear in your language, run the questions in German only, with read-aloud. The real Testheft has no translation, and the wording of the 460 questions is public, so recognising it is most of the work.

Guides

The Einbürgerungstest, written out properly.

Nine guides on what people search for about Germany's naturalisation test: who has to take it, the 33 questions and the 17 to pass, what is on it and where the questions come from, registration and the 25 euro fee, the Bundesland questions, the test Leben in Deutschland, the requirements since the law changed in 2024 and 2025, the language of the test, and how to prepare.

Questions

Common questions.

Who has to take the German citizenship test?

Anyone applying for naturalisation who has to show knowledge of Germany's legal and social order, which is most adult applicants. BAMF exempts people with a German school-leaving certificate; a degree from a German university counts too. Children under 16 do not take it, and it is waived for people who cannot meet the requirement because of illness, disability or age. Passing the test Leben in Deutschland with 17 correct also counts.

How many questions are on the Einbürgerungstest, and how many do you need to pass?

33 multiple-choice questions with four options each: 30 general questions and 3 on the Bundesland where you are registered. You have 60 minutes, and you pass with 17 correct answers. That is fixed in the Einbürgerungstestverordnung and stated on BAMF's pages.

What is on the German citizenship test?

Questions from BAMF's published catalogue: 300 general questions in the areas Leben in der Demokratie, Geschichte und Verantwortung and Mensch und Gesellschaft, plus 10 for each Bundesland, 460 in all. Every question in the real test is one of them, word for word. Ten questions on Jewish life in Germany, Israel and antisemitism were added in 2024.

How do I register for the Einbürgerungstest, and what does it cost?

You register at one of BAMF's Prüfstellen, most of them Volkshochschulen, which set the dates. The fee is 25 euros, fixed by the Einbürgerungstestverordnung. After the test BAMF sends a certificate with your result; if you score below 17 you can take the test again.

Can I take the German citizenship test in English?

No. The Testheft is in German only, and the language requirement for naturalisation is B1 German anyway. That is why the app shows each question in German and in nine other languages: understand it in yours, then learn to recognise the German wording, which is public and does not change on the day.

Is the test Leben in Deutschland the same as the Einbürgerungstest?

Same questions, same format, different purpose. Leben in Deutschland is the final test of the integration course's orientation course; 15 correct answers pass the course, and 17 or more also count as the Einbürgerungstest for naturalisation, so many people never sit the test twice.

What are the requirements for German citizenship in 2026?

Five years of lawful residence, a permanent right of residence, a secure livelihood without social benefits as a rule, no relevant convictions, B1 German, the Einbürgerungstest or an equivalent, and a commitment to the free democratic order and to Germany's historical responsibility. Dual citizenship is allowed since June 2024. The three-year route for special integration was abolished on 30 October 2025.

Are there different questions for each Bundesland?

Yes. Each of the 16 Länder has 10 questions of its own about its coat of arms, capital, parliament, minister-president and neighbours, and 3 of them appear in your test, chosen for the Land where you have your Erstwohnsitz. The app holds all 160 and asks the 10 for the Land you set.

Does the Einbürgerungstest bestehen app work offline?

Yes. Questions, lessons, translations and mocks are stored on the device, and progress stays on the phone rather than in an account. There is nothing to sign up for.

Is the Einbürgerungstest bestehen app made by BAMF?

No. It is an independent study aid from Vishwen Labs, not affiliated with BAMF or any other German authority. The questions are BAMF's public catalogue; the explanations, lessons and translations are the app's own, and the facts on this page come from BAMF, the Einbürgerungstestverordnung and the Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz.
