How many questions are on the US citizenship test, and how many do you need to pass?
Vishwen Labs

Twenty questions, twelve to pass, if you filed Form N-400 on or after 20 October 2025. The officer draws them from USCIS's published list of 128 and stops when you have answered 12 correctly or 9 incorrectly. If you filed before that date you take the 2008 test: up to 10 questions from a list of 100, 6 correct to pass, ending at 6 right or 5 wrong. The English test is separate and the same for everyone: one sentence read aloud out of three, one written out of three, and your speaking judged through the interview.
The 2025 test: 20 of 128, 12 to pass
USCIS: “The 2025 naturalization civics test is an oral test consisting of 20 questions from the list of 128 civics test questions.” And: “You must answer 12 questions correctly to pass the 2025 test. You will fail the test if you answer 9 of the 20 questions incorrectly.” The officer stops at whichever comes first, so the test is often shorter than 20 questions. Twelve right in a row ends it after 12; nine wrong ends it whatever else happened. There is no partial credit and no penalty for a wrong answer beyond the count, so a guess costs nothing more than a pass would.
The 2008 test: 10 of 100, 6 to pass
For anyone who filed before 20 October 2025, USCIS keeps the old rule: “The USCIS officer will ask you up to 10 questions from the list of 100 civics test questions. You must answer 6 questions correctly to pass.” The failure line is the mirror image: “You will fail the test if you answer 5 of the 10 questions incorrectly.” An interview in 2026 on a 2025 application still uses this test; the version follows the filing date, however long the wait.
The 65/20 version: 10 of 20, 6 to pass
Applicants who were 65 or older with 20 years as a permanent resident when they filed study only the 20 questions USCIS marks with an asterisk. The officer asks 10 of them, 6 correct passes, and the test may be taken in the language of the applicant's choice. It is the 2008 shape over a list one sixth the size. The exceptions guide lists the 20 by number.
The English test is not a count
It has no score out of anything. Read one of three sentences aloud correctly, write one of three correctly, and answer the officer's questions well enough to show you understand them. A stumble on the first sentence is not a fail as long as one of the three is right. The sentences are built from USCIS's published reading and writing vocabulary: names like Washington and Lincoln, civics words like Congress, President, flag and citizen, place names, holidays, months, and the small words that hold a sentence together.

How the app's sessions map to the numbers
The quiz uses the official shape: 20 questions with a pass at 12 for the 2025 test, 10 with a pass at 6 for the 2008 test, chosen by the test version you set. The voice interview asks 5, 10, 15 or 20 questions and grades each spoken answer against the acceptable answers, and the progress screen keeps answered, accuracy and mistakes per mode and per topic. Because the shape is official, a result reads directly: 12 or more here is 12 or more there, on the same list.
What the numbers mean for preparation
The list is 128 questions, all public, and the test asks 20 of them. Nobody can predict which 20, so the target is the list, with the acceptable answers, not a pass mark. Someone who can answer 120 of the 128 without looking will pass in 12 questions almost every time; someone who knows 80 is at the mercy of the draw. The nine-wrong ceiling is the number to fear: with a 60 percent list, nine misses in 20 is close to expected.

Questions people also ask
How many questions do you need to get right on the citizenship test?
12 of 20 on the 2025 test, for N-400s filed on or after 20 October 2025. 6 of 10 on the 2008 test, for earlier filers. 6 of 10 on the shorter 65/20 test. The officer stops asking as soon as you reach the pass number, or the fail number of 9 or 5 wrong.
Is the citizenship test multiple choice?
No. The civics test is oral: the officer reads a question and you answer in your own words, and any of the acceptable answers on USCIS's list counts. The reading test is read aloud and the writing test is written from dictation. Multiple-choice quizzes are a study tool, not the format.
