How to prepare for the Swedish citizenship test

Prepare for the Swedish citizenship test by reading Sverige i fokus, the 48-page material the questions are written from, first in a language you read easily and then in Swedish, and by practising multiple-choice questions on it under the clock. The test is 60 questions in 90 minutes in Swedish, at a level UHR compares to the end of compulsory school, and the pass mark is not yet published. Check first whether you need it at all: grades, SFI course D or komvux may already satisfy the requirement.
A plan for the Swedish citizenship test
- Check whether you need the test at all. You need it if you are 16 to 66 and your documents do not show knowledge of Swedish society: a grade in social studies from Swedish schooling or komvux normally does. Migrationsverket assesses this in your application and sends a letter if the test is required; nobody sits it without one.
- Get Sverige i fokus. UHR publishes the material free on its pages about medborgarskapsprovet: 48 pages in 13 chapters, produced with the National Agency for Education. The questions are written from it. Keep it on your phone.
- Read it twice, in two languages. Once in a language you read fast, to understand how Sweden works, and once in Swedish, sentence by sentence, matching each term to the idea you already have. The test is in Swedish only.
- Weight democracy, government, law, rights and history. Those chapters carry the most named institutions and dates, and UHR's five example questions came from the public sector, the head of state, natural resources, history and freedom of expression. Traditions and geography are lighter.
- Learn the Swedish words for the institutions. Riksdagen, regeringen, kommun, region, grundlagarna, yttrandefrihet, myndighet, välfärd: know them as words and know what each covers, because the questions will use them without translation.
- Practise 60-question mocks in Swedish, under the clock. Run full mocks in Swedish with 90 minutes on the timer and read two things afterwards: the percentage, and which chapters the misses came from. Three in a row comfortably above any plausible pass mark, with no weak chapter, is a fair signal.
- Watch UHR and Migrationsverket, and book when the letter comes. UHR will publish the pass level, the next dates and places, and when registration reopens, during autumn 2026. Registration for the first sitting filled and closed, so book as soon as your letter and the window coincide.
Why the material is the syllabus
UHR does not hide what the test is based on. Its information says the questions are written from Sverige i fokus, and the five example questions it released in July 2026 are each answerable from a page of that material. That is the structure of a fair test: the syllabus is public and short, and the questions do not stray from it. It also means the most useful preparation is to know 48 pages well in Swedish rather than to guess at what a citizenship test might ask.
Learn it in both languages, deliberately
If English is faster for you, use it first: the point of the first pass is to understand how Sweden is governed, what the fundamental laws protect and how the welfare system is paid for, and that is easier in a language you read well. Then switch. The app shows every lesson and question in Swedish and English a tap apart and reads the Swedish aloud, so the second pass can be done sentence by sentence. By the time you run mocks in Swedish only, the words that matter should be familiar rather than translated on the fly.
Use the mocks for measurement
A mock's job is to tell you where you stand. Run it under conditions, in Swedish, with the timer on, and read two things: the percentage against the pass line, and which chapters the misses came from. The first says whether you are ready; the second says what to reread. The app's pass line is preliminary until UHR publishes its own, so read the percentage as a percentage and aim well clear of any figure in the plausible range.
The language requirement runs alongside
Passing the civics test does not prove Swedish, and proving Swedish does not cover civics. For citizenship you show both, and for now the language half is shown with grades, SFI course D, komvux, a Tisus result or, during the transition, a test such as Swedex, until UHR's own language test arrives by 1 October 2027. Reading Sverige i fokus in Swedish is good reading practice at about the right level, and the vocabulary overlaps heavily with the test's; the language guide sets out the rules.
